 Boston-Area Tommy John Surgery
« Thread Started on Mar 8, 2012, 8:01am »

My son is a top-flight pitcher on track to the pros. Just found out he needs Tommy John surgery. He is devastated. We live in the metro Boston area. Does he need to go to Dr. Yokum/Dr. Andrews or can someone in Boston do just as well? It seems like the Red Sox players (Ellsbury and Lackey) who need orthopedic surgery are going to Dr. Yokum instead of staying in Boston - is there a reason why they aren't using anyone in Boston? Finally, where is the best place to take the replacement ligament from in Tommy John surgery?

I'm sorry to hear about your son's injury. If you have the ability, you may consider bringing him to Dr. Andrews, Cain, or Dugas at Andrews Sports Medicine in Birmingham, AL (205-939-3699, www.andrewscenters.com). Drs. Dugas and Cain are the hand-picked proteges of Dr. Andrews, and are excellent. In the Boston area, you should consider Dr. Luke Oh at Mass General; he is excellent too. Whomever you pick, feel free to say I recommended them for you. Let us know how it goes.

Normally I believe they prefer to use the palmeris longus from the forearm, but not everyone has one. If not then I think they use a tendon from the leg.

I'm sure Dr. Yokum is very capable but my guess is that he's the flavor of the week for the pro ballplayers since Strasburg went to him for TJ surgery and Lackey would have seen him through his years with the Angels.

Keep in mind that rehab is extremely important in TJ surgery and that you want the doctor and the PT to be able to communicate well.

Dr. Yokum is not a flavor of the week. He is always a very good sports medicine orthopaedic surgeon.

Very true.
