ASMI-
On the ASMI website, it mentioned that you guys allow students to come in for an observational visit. Is Jay the right guy to contact to set this appointment? I am interested in observing both the orthopaedic and primary care sports medicine clinics as well as the physical therapy clinic.
Thanks, Anthony

Anthony: You should call or send email to Dr. Fleisig who is director of ASMI. Here is a staff list of ASMI: http://www.asmi.org/asmiweb/personnel/personnel.htm
I am not sure who is responsible about visiting PT department, but I think you should talk to Kevin Wilk. I don't have his info, so please ask Dr. Fleisig for more information.
If you have more questions, feel free to ask.

Anthony,
The opportunity to observe in clinic or surgery is restricted to medical students who need to be vetted by the attendings. It is not an easy process. Jan Flurry, the contact on that ASMI website page, is the correct lady to contact to begin the process. But beware that if you are not a medical student, then you won't be allowed to visit the OR or the clinic. In the same vein, in order to observe in the PT Clinic, you'll need to be a PT student and will need to have your visit ok'd by the staff there. Again, Jan is the first person you need to contact for that process.
Thanks, Becky

Becky, Thanks for the heads up. I did email Jan about a couple weeks ago, but I did not receive a response. I just sent her another email yesterday. I am currently a pre-med junior who knows his heart is in sports medicine, but I am having second thoughts before going forward and getting ready for the next chapter in my life(medical school). I love the orthopedic setting and I want to make sure I make the correct decision before putting all my efforts into graduate school exams and graduate school.

Anthony,
We're in the process of getting ready for the new Fellowship year. It is a very busy time for Jan, so you may not hear from her for awhile.
What you need to do is find a doctor (or two or three) who you can shadow for a day or two. Honestly, I'm pretty sure that you won't be allowed to do that here. Ask your own doctor if you can job shadow him/her, or if they can recommend someone for you to shadow. The more experience you can get (different fields, different people), the more definitive an answer you'll have for moving forward with your career.
