Hi there, I have a 14 year old daughter who was unfortunately diagnosed with a moderate UCL tear and a small tendon tear to go along with it. I'm looking for some input regarding possible rehab. As of now the Dr. is not advising Tommy Johns surgery because he doesn't feel it's necessary and 2, apparently she is still growing as evidenced by an open growth plate in her elbow (no injury or damage to the growth plate). Mild edema in the joint. She is still a lot of pain, one week after the injury. Has any body had any experience in having competitive softball players return to the field following this kind of injury? My daughter is primarily a middle infielder (plays 2nd in travel ball, short in HS). She injured it during warmups, felt a pop. She had played three months at short, every game, every inning, which was probably what did her in.
She is a passionate and highly motivated player and I have no doubt she will work hard in rehab, but I'm concerned she will injure it again when she returns to the field. Can an athlete recover from this kind of injury without surgery? When she plays again, should she wear a brace of some sort? She enjoys playing the outfield as well. Should she consider transitioning from middle infield to outfield? Any guidance and input will be deeply appreciated.
Your daughter has 6 growth plates in her elbow. I would be curious to know which ones are still open. The one your doctor is concerned about is the Medial Epicondyle. Until this growth plate closes you have to be careful.
Ligament tears will heal in time but because ligaments have reduced blood flow it may take a while.
Where is this torn tendon? What muscle does itvattach to?
As with baseball players, your daughters problem is poor throwing technique. Shoot me an email if you would like to discuss?
