I'm interested in sports medical advice regarding tournament baseball (travel ball) for 13yr olds..... Specifically about pitching both Saturday and Sunday. As most people know these tournament run on weekends only, and often that means a pitcher might pitch both Saturday and Sunday. Is this acceptable from a sports medicine perspective? In my sons case (13 yr old) he doesn't play on any other teams so he is not pitching (other than bullpens) outside of tournament weekends every other week. But he has been asked to pitch a couple of innings on Saturday and then a couple of innings more on Sunday. Is this risky? Are there limits we should watch for (specifically 2 days in a row)? Again, in my sons case this happens every other week and no other pitching is done between other than bullpens after 4-5 days of rest between. The most extreme example we had was he pitch 59 pitches on Saturday and then 99 pitches on Sunday. That just didn't feel right to me so really interested to get some sports med opinions and others as well.

dad30, Your gut-feeling is correct that this is not right. Science has shown pitching back-to-back like that to be risky. Check out the age-specific guidelines and other scientifically based information on www.pitchsmart.org. Please share this with others, including those running the tournaments and the teams.
