After a recent MRI my son (15 year old HS freshman) was diagnosed with a "mild to moderate" bone marrow edema. No other issues were found.
The doctor said that only rest will heal the injury, and that my son should not pitch for 2 months. When prodded he said that hitting and playing the field should be OK, but to stop if there is pain.
The background is that my son had mild discomfort in the fall so we shut down early. He took 8 solid weeks off from throwing and felt discomfort with the first session in December. We then followed 4 weeks of PT and rest and he had pain again in next session.
I'm wondering if son should try to throw at all. The doctor said that the root cause of the injury could be a HBP that he sustained in late July that showed itself when pitching in the fall. Or it could just be the long term result of stress from throwing. I'm concerned that if the cause really is stress from throwing that my son should not be throwing at all.
