The only limitations I would put on walking with ankle weights would be if you have had recent surgery or fracture you should not walk with additional weights unless directed by your physician. This could also increase your fall risk, especially in the very young and very old. Otherwise, I know of no studies regarding risk and/or benefit of ankle weights. However, the added resistance should provide an increased cardiovascular and muscle mass benefit to your exercise routine.
